Formed to Serve: A Liturgical Training Camp for
Altar Servers
The Liturgy Commission, in collaboration with
the Social Communication Commission of the
Diocese of Chikmagalur, conducted a one-day
Altar Servers' Camp on 22nd April 2025 at Holy
Family Church, Sundekere. This camp was
specially organized for altar servers from six
parishes: Arehalli, Sakaleshpura, Matasagara,
Fatimapura, Belur, and Sundekere, with a total
of 45 children participating.
The main objective of the camp was to educate
young altar servers about the sacredness of
their ministry, deepen their understanding of
the Holy Mass, and strengthen their commitment
to serving at the altar with devotion and
discipline.
The sessions were led by Fr Supreeth
Menezes, Secretary of the Liturgy Commission of
the Diocese. He taught the children several key
topics, including: • The importance of the altar server's
role in the liturgy
• The meaning and structure of the Holy Mass
• The discipline and behaviour expected at the
altar
• The significance of postures and gestures used
during the liturgy
• The names and purposes of religious articles
used in the celebration of the Mass
• The value of full, active, and conscious
participation in the liturgy
A practical training session was also conducted,
giving the children hands-on experience in altar
serving, including how to carry candles, hold
the Roman Missal, arrange the altar, and
coordinate movements during the Mass.
Fr Supreeth was supported by Fr Vincent Marcel
Pinto, Fr William Pereira, and Fr Anil Lobo, who
helped guide and instruct the children,
enriching the sessions with their insights and
encouragement.
The camp was both educational and spiritually
enriching. The children participated with
enthusiasm and showed great interest in learning
more about their role in the Church. They also
enjoyed the fellowship and shared experiences
with peers from neighboring parishes.
The day concluded with a short prayer and words
of encouragement from the priests, motivating
the children to serve the Lord with dedication
and love.
This initiative was a valuable effort by the
Liturgy and Social Communication Commissions in
nurturing the spiritual growth of young altar
servers and building a strong foundation for
future liturgical ministry in the Diocese.
